What is an avatar?

An avatar is an online character that children can make on their own. Every child is unique and they can express this by customising their own online avatar. This character welcomes them back every time they return, and children can change it as often as they like.

How can I change my avatar’s appearance?

To change an avatar’s appearance, simply log into the program and click on your child's avatar at the top. You will be able to select a variety of items in the change room. You have lots of free items to choose from as well as extra accessories you can buy from the Shop. To pay for these you will need golden eggs, which you earn by completing lessons, books and puzzles. You'll need to visit the Shop and buy these items before you go to the change room.

What do I need to supply?

All you need to supply is a desktop computer or tablet device, and the ability to set your child up on it at least two times per week. The program works best on a broadband connection.

How old should my child be to use ABC Reading Eggspress?

ABC Reading Eggspress is aimed at children aged between 7-13 years.

How far does ABC Reading Eggspress go?

ABC Reading Eggspress currently meets the needs of students up to year 6.

Which skills will ABC Reading Eggspress teach my child?

ABC Reading Eggspress builds reading and comprehension skills. The comprehension lessons offer interactive lessons that model and teach children a variety of strategies to interpret texts. The comprehensive online library provides children with a wealth of fiction and nonfiction titles to read and explore. Each title has an online quiz for the child to complete, and there are also opportunities to rate each book. The Stadium allows children to compete in real time against other players and tests skills in one of four areas — spelling, vocabulary, usage and grammar. The English Skills section offers more than 200 spelling lessons to enrich and extend the learning experience.

Will my child’s golden eggs from ABC Reading Eggs roll over to ABC Reading Eggspress?

No. ABC Reading Eggspress is a separate program from ABC Reading Eggs and focuses on building a range of new literacy skills. The program features its own unique rewards system, including golden eggs (which can be used to purchase new items and games exclusive to the ABC Reading Eggspress online world) and trading cards.

What is comprehension?

Comprehension is the ability to read a text, engage with it and extract meaning. It is one of the key components in the reading process. Sometimes children might appear to be confident readers and may read a passage aloud with fluency and expression in their voice. However, when questioned, they may not fully understand what the text was about. There are several different strategies that assist children to engage fully with a text. These strategies need to be taught carefully and in context. ABC Reading Eggspress models and teaches children these strategies across a range of texts and reading levels.

My child has difficulties with comprehension. How can ABC Reading Eggspress help?

The ABC Reading Eggspress comprehension lessons can help children who have difficulty interpreting and understanding text. They offer a variety of interactive lessons to teach important comprehension strategies. Children firstly engage in pre-reading activities that model and teach a variety of strategies. This is followed by a reading passage and a set of questions that assess a child’s factual, inferential and critical understandings of the text.

Pre-reading activities in the comprehension lessons are designed to teach children a variety of ways to comprehend text. Check that your child is working at the lowest level if they are finding the texts too difficult. The placement test is a good way to ensure your child is working at the appropriate level.

A lot of the books in the program are too hard for my child.

The books in the ABC Reading Eggspress Library all have a reading age level. You can choose books at your child’s reading age by changing the reading age filter that sits above the bookcase when you are looking for books. For learning purposes a book should ideally be at an ‘instructional’ level which means it is not too easy or too difficult for a child to read independently. Books in the library start with a reading age of 5 years. If your child has a reading age less than 5 years they may need to build more reading skills using the ABC Reading Eggs program.

Can my child just read a book without having to do the quiz for it?

Yes. They can read any book in the library purely for pleasure. They do not have to complete the short quiz.

How do I know the books are about subjects suitable for my child?

ABC Reading Eggspress books are also published by Blake Education as real books that are commonly used in schools. Blake Education has been publishing high-quality educational resources for teachers and students for more than 30 years. All of our books are written and illustrated by talented authors and illustrators about subjects that are suitable for children.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

The comprehension lessons in ABC Reading Eggspress include a 16-question quiz at the end of each lesson. Every time your child completes the quiz, you will be able to see their quiz score in your Family Dashboard by clicking on your child's progress tab. The Family Dashboard will also show you your child's current comprehension lesson and spelling lesson (in English Skills), as well as their last completed fiction and non-fiction texts.

Will my child be rewarded for making progress? What rewards are on offer?

ABC Reading Eggspress is full of rewards and has several motivational elements that will encourage children to continue to read and learn. Children collect golden eggs and trading cards, play games, dress their avatar and furnish their own apartment.

Why are there games? I thought it was an educational program.

Research has shown that motivation is a key element in encouraging children to keep learning. Most children enjoy playing games and we have included them as one of the rewards. Many of the games have an educational element and children must 'pay' to play the games. This means they need to earn golden eggs by doing solid learning activities before they can play any of the games.

What are Targets?

Targets are one of the ways we encourage children to fully explore the ABC Reading Eggspress world. It’s a big program and sometimes children can get stuck using only some parts of it. Early Targets introduce the many features of the program while later ones reward concentrated effort. Hitting each Achievement Target provides a goal, something to aim for, and is a fun way to reward learning.

Will this program help my child with NAPLAN tests?

Yes. The questions that appear in the comprehension lessons and the Stadium have been designed to help students improve their test-taking skills. We have included question types similar to those found in the NAPLAN Reading and Language Conventions tests. The ABC Reading Eggspress program covers comprehension, word usage, vocabulary, spelling and grammar skills.
