Working on the computer or tablet is a great way for children to build skills. The computer never judges them. They can progress at their own rate and if they are having problems, lessons can be repeated as many times as they want. Do I need to sit with my child for every lesson?
You only need to be there for the first lesson, to make sure that your child knows their way around and understands what to do. After that, it’s entirely optional, but it can be fun to watch if you have the time.
Why do children love ABC Reading Eggs?
We have worked hard to make this the best online reading program for young children. It has everything that children love to do online. The games, the songs, the variety of activities and the many rewards all work together to make learning to read an exciting, fun and enjoyable experience. And young children love learning to read.
Why doesn’t the program teach the alphabet in alphabetical order?
The ABC Reading Eggs program has been designed to get children reading as quickly as possible. To do this, we initially need to focus on the sounds and high frequency words that will enable children to read their first simple words and sentences. We want children to learn how letters make words and how these words can make sentences – sentences that they can read. This is why the program does not progress in alphabetical order as ABC Reading Eggs is all about learning the skills and strategies that are important when you are learning to read. Very early on in the program children learn that what they read has meaning and it makes sense. They also experience real success – children read their first story book in Lesson 9 – and this is what learning to read is all about, reading books for meaning and enjoyment.
Why are there online reward games?
After every lesson, each child earns enough golden eggs that they can spend in the Games section. Here they can choose a game to play. As children work through their reading lessons, they are concentrating, working hard and achieving as they learn many new reading skills. We want children to know that we realise that they are working hard in their learning. They deserve a reward for their efforts and sometimes they simply want to play. That’s what these games are for – a fun way to say well done!
How do I put the furniture that we bought from the Shop into my ABC Reading Eggs house?
Go to your house and click on the Zoom icon. Now click on the floor of your house where you want to add the item. More buttons will now appear at the bottom of your screen. Click on the + button to add items. If you want to add items to your garden, zoom into your garden first and now add your items.
Why is there a critter collection?
After each lesson children are rewarded with a fun new ABC Reading Eggs critter to add to their zoo. This collection continues to grow, the more reading lessons they complete. Children love collecting and our cute critters are fun to watch and fun to collect. The ABC Reading Eggs critters also have a fun learning to read connection – go to your Critters page and check out each card and you’ll see that the critter cards have information that builds knowledge of the letter or sound that was the focus of the lesson.

The comprehensive online library provides children with a wealth of fiction and nonfiction titles to read and explore. Each title has an online quiz for the child to complete, and there are also opportunities to rate each book. The Stadium allows children to compete in real time against other players and tests skills in one of four areas — spelling, vocabulary, usage and grammar. The English Skills section offers more than 200 spelling lessons to enrich and extend the learning experience.
Will my child’s golden eggs from ABC Reading Eggs roll over to ABC Reading Eggspress?
No. ABC Reading Eggspress is a separate program from ABC Reading Eggs and focuses on building a range of new literacy skills. The program features its own unique rewards system, including golden eggs (which can be used to purchase new items and games exclusive to the ABC Reading Eggspress online world) and trading cards.
What is comprehension?
Comprehension is the ability to read a text, engage with it and extract meaning. It is one of the key components in the reading process. Sometimes children might appear to be confident readers and may read a passage aloud with fluency and expression in their voice. However, when questioned, they may not fully understand what the text was about. There are several different strategies that assist children to engage fully with a text. These strategies need to be taught carefully and in context. ABC Reading Eggspress models and teaches children these strategies across a range of texts and reading levels.
My child has difficulties with comprehension. How can ABC Reading Eggspress help?
The ABC Reading Eggspress comprehension lessons can help children who have difficulty interpreting and understanding text. They offer a variety of interactive lessons to teach important comprehension strategies. Children firstly engage in pre-reading activities that model and teach a variety of strategies. This is followed by a reading passage and a set of questions that assess a child’s factual, inferential and critical understandings of the text.
Pre-reading activities in the comprehension lessons are designed to teach children a variety of ways to comprehend text. Check that your child is working at the lowest level if they are finding the texts too difficult. The placement test is a good way to ensure your child is working at the appropriate level.
A lot of the books in the program are too hard for my child.
The books in the ABC Reading Eggspress Library all have a reading age level. You can choose books at your child’s reading age by changing the reading age filter that sits above the bookcase when you are looking for books. For learning purposes a book should ideally be at an ‘instructional’ level which means it is not too easy or too difficult for a child to read independently. Books in the library start with a reading age of 6 years. If your child has a reading age less than 6 years they may need to build more reading skills using the ABC Reading Eggs program.
Can my child just read something without having to take a test about it?
Yes. They can read any book in the library purely for pleasure. They do not have to complete the short quiz.
How do I know the books are about subjects suitable for my child?
ABC Reading Eggspress books are also published by Blake Education as real books that are commonly used in schools. Blake Education has been publishing high-quality educational resources for teachers and students for more than 15 years. All of our books are written and illustrated by talented authors and illustrators about subjects that are suitable for children.
How will I know if my child is making progress?
The comprehension lessons in ABC Reading Eggspress include a 16-question quiz at the end of each lesson. Every time your child completes the quiz, you will be able to see their quiz score in your parent dashboard by clicking on your child's progress tab. The parent dashboard will also show you your child's current comprehension lesson and spelling lesson (in English Skills), as well as their last completed fiction and non-fiction texts.
Will my child be rewarded for making progress? What rewards are on offer?
ABC Reading Eggspress is full of rewards and has several motivational elements that will encourage children to continue to read and learn. Children collect golden eggs and trading cards, play games, dress their avatar and furnish their own apartment.
Why are there games? I thought it was an educational program.
Research has shown that motivation is a key element in encouraging children to keep learning. Most children enjoy playing games and we have included them as one of the rewards. Many of the games have an educational element and children must ‘pay’ to play the games. This means they need to earn golden eggs by doing solid learning activities before they can play any of the games.
What are Targets?
Targets are one of the ways that we encourage children to fully explore the Reading Eggspress world. It’s a big program and sometimes children can get stuck using only some parts of it. Early Targets introduce the many features of the program while later ones reward concentrated effort. Hitting each Achievement Target provides a goal, something to aim for and is a fun way to reward learning.
Will this program help my child with NAPLAN tests?
Yes. The questions that appear in the comprehension lessons and the Stadium have been designed to help students improve their test-taking skills. We have included question types similar to those found in the NAPLAN Reading and Language Conventions tests.
